Vitamin Info

The value of eating certain foods in order to health maintain has been recognized since ancient times. However, it has only been since the early 20th century that the idea of the vitamin was even formulated. But what is a vitamin, exactly?

What is a Vitamin?

A vitamin is defined as any water or fat soluble organic micronutrient necessary for life. This means essentially that a vitamin is any substance that is necessary for normal, healthy growth and development (as well as maintenance of adult health), but in much smaller amounts than macronutrients like carbohydrates or proteins. Although vitamins are necessary for life, the human body cannot produce them (with the exception of Vitamin D) and therefore they must be ingested.

Why do we need vitamins?
The specific answer is different for every vitamin; however the common answer is that without ingesting a proper amount of vitamins, a normally healthy person will become sick, and in extreme cases, die. It has also been shown that ingesting larger than normal amounts of certain vitamins can help prevent or relieve symptoms of disease. Vitamin A, for example, is an antioxidant and as such helps to clean your body of free radicals, which have been shown to be a cause of cancer. Vitamin A is also necessary for night vision and healthy skin. A lack of Vitamin C can lead to a wide range of health issues, from aching joints to slow healing and even scurvy. Higher doses may also reduce the risk of certain kinds of cancer. Vitamin D increases absorption of calcium, and helps in bone growth and bone integrity. Vitamin D deficiency in childhood can lead to rickets in childhood and softening of the bone and convulsions as an adult.
